What JPEG 2000 does differently
JPEG 2000 was designed as the successor to JPEG. It uses wavelets instead of the block transform, so at heavy compression it blurs rather than breaking into the familiar 8×8 squares. It can also work fully losslessly, carry transparency, and store one file at several resolutions at once — useful when the same image serves a thumbnail and a print.
It never became universal: browsers and operating systems did not add support. Where it did stick is where the requirements are written down — medical archives, national libraries, geospatial imagery, court and government document systems.
What happens to your file
The picture is decoded from JPEG and re-encoded into the JPEG 2000 codestream. Pixel dimensions stay the same; the container changes to the one your system expects.
Worth being clear about: converting a JPEG to JPX does not restore what JPEG already discarded. The result carries the quality of the source, in a format that will not lose more on the next save. Convert from the best original you have rather than from a copy that has been through several rounds already.
Common questions
Is JPX the same as JP2?
Both are JPEG 2000. JP2 is the baseline container, JPX the extended one; systems that ask for a specific extension usually mean the container, not different image data.
Will the image lose quality?
Not visibly. The picture is re-encoded once, and JPEG 2000 handles this better than JPEG does — but it cannot recover detail the original JPEG already threw away.
What opens a JPX file?
Professional imaging software, GIMP, IrfanView with a plugin, and the systems that requested the format. Browsers generally do not — if you need to view it casually, convert back to JPG.
