What compressing an already efficient format gains

At equal quality WebP weighs 25–35% less than JPEG, and it does what JPEG cannot: transparency and animation. But images on websites are routinely saved with headroom — at 90–100%, where the difference from 80% is invisible even when you zoom in. That headroom is what compression takes back: typically one and a half to three times smaller with no visible change in the browser.

Transparency survives: the alpha channel is neither discarded nor filled with white. An animated WebP stays animated too — frames are re-encoded, but their number and timings do not change.

Where WebP helps and where it gets in the way

For a website WebP is the right call: less weight, faster pages, better speed scores. The trouble starts outside the browser, where plenty of viewers, older editors and some messengers do not know the format and offer to download the file instead of showing it.

If a WebP downloaded from a site and nothing will open it, the fix is not compression but conversion to JPG or PNG — the file gets heavier and opens anywhere.

Common questions

Will transparency be lost?

No. The alpha channel is preserved and transparent areas stay transparent — unlike a conversion to JPEG, where transparency is filled with white.

Does the animation survive?

Yes. An animated WebP stays animated: every frame and its duration carry over, only the weight changes.

How much smaller can a WebP get?

Usually one and a half to three times, if the source was saved at high quality. A file that was already compressed aggressively will barely move — the format is efficient to begin with.

What opens a WebP file?

Any browser — they all support it. If you need the file in a program that does not, convert the WebP to JPG or PNG.
